NEW REQUIREMENTS IN ASPHALTENE STABILITY AND COMPATIBILITY MEASUREMENT OF CRUDE OIL AND MARINE FUEL OILS
Yesterday, 4th of March, Auramarine’s Dr. Jaakko Lehtinen held a poster presentation in Pittcon 2025 conference & exposition. Read more about the study here.
The importance of stability and compatibility measurement has raised its head again lately both in refinery and marine industries. Oil supply disruption can be caused for example by a pandemic, a political conflict or a force of nature, and leads to refineries facing variance in the composition of crude oil they are getting. On the other hand, marine fuel has undergone a big change with the implementation of maximum 0,50 % sulfur in 2020.
Porla fuel analyser can be used for several applications
Porla fuel analyser can be used in several applications for refineries. The analyser is an effective tool for optimising the productivity of visbreaker and hydrocracking units of oil refineries. With the help of accurate stability analyses, it is possible to run the process very near the severity limit in order to get maximum yield of valuable lighter components and still have residual product, which will meet the quality specifications.
With the multitude of existing and newly developed ultra low sulphur fuels (ULSFO), properties such as stability and blending compatibility need to be considered more carefully. Very often the fuels with low asphaltene content are subject to compatibility issues which can cause clogging and result in severe problems and even engine failures on board. PORLA analyser can measure the stability down to 0.05 % concentration of asphaltenes.
Flocculation examples with oil samples are shown
In the study, presented in Pittcon 2025 by Dr. Jaakko Lehtinen, examples of flocculation with different oil samples such as heavy fuel oil, crude oil and bitumen are shown. The asphaltene precipitation point can be accurately determined by PORLA analyser according to ASTM D 7112 for all these samples.
