Career story of Mikko Sinivaara

Educational background and choosing the field

After graduating from the Turku University of Applied Sciences in the year 2000 as a Machine Automation Engineer, Mikko Sinivaara directly joined a company that is in the marine industry. This means that he has the experience of over 25 years in the industry. Also having taken courses and advanced special studies at for example Tampere University of Technology and Åbo Akademi, Mikko chose machine automation as a field of study because he not only found it interesting but also discovered that it is indeed the perfect mixture of mechanical and electrical engineering as well as automation. The career as an engineer took the first place.

Career path: From system design to methanol project lead

In Mikko’s 25-year career, there has been room for many different titles and careers. While at his prior company, he started off in system design, Mikko also spent time as the Design Manager and Sales Manager. He also was a Training Manager for a global service organisation. After being recruited by a head-hunter to Auramarine, Mikko has also had a couple of titles. During the 5 years he has spent at Auramarine, Mikko has worked in Life Cycle Services as well as in his current position as the Project Manager. Specifically, he oversees the methanol projects.

Opportunities and internationality at Auramarine

As an employer, Mikko sees Auramarine as a place that you can do a multitude of different things in. Because we are rather a small company, there are more tasks to be completed, and those tasks can sometimes be from a different area. This however, Mikko sees as an opportunity to broaden one’s skillset. Additionally, Mikko appreciates the internationality of the company, getting to help customers all over the world find the best solution to their problem by working together. Overall, a very fun job, he says.

Beyond the office: Problem solving as a way of life

Problem solving and working on all kinds of tasks translates to Mikko’s free time as well. During the time he is not working, Mikko renovates and upkeeps his home and garden, an old house located fittingly by the sea. Additionally, he spends time with his dog and enjoys reading.

Looking forward: Staying curious and open to growth

For the future, Mikko aims to stay in the Marine business. However, he is happy with continuing in his current position at Auramarine and might even find his interest in specialist positions at the company opening a door at the company to develop further.

Maintaining workmanship and finding new ways to improve in the career. Constantly learning new things and taking responsibility of one’s work, takes you far.
